For those ladies out there that like to use Halloween as an excuse to show a little more skin. Keep reading this DIY Selena Quintanilla costume is for you!
I'm not going to lie this costume was out of my comfort zone. I am a little less BIDI and a lot more BOM. I'm pretty modest and usually don't show too much skin out in public, but this costume was just too good not to do. There's something about a costume that gives you a boost of confidence to add an extra pep in your step. It helps that my photographer is also my husband and the location we shot at was pretty private. It was raining the day we shot but just like any rockstar the show must go on!
This DIY is super simple but will take time to make. So put on your favorite Netflix show or podcast and start bedazzling!
Supplies:
- The Big Bling bag
- Hat
- Old bra
- Glue gun
- Glue sticks
Just start gluing. I looked at Selena outfits for reference but made my own design on the bra. There is something therapeutic about sitting and gluing rhinestones onto something. I started on the bottom of the bra cup and glued down gems along the wire working my way up. For the hat, I started on the bottom middle and worked my way out. Once again you can plan out exactly what you want or just go for it, like me.
I spent a little bit more on putting this costume together than I did with the Frida Kahlo costume. It's still totally affordable and with a little bit of thriftiness, you will be surprised on what you can dig up of your own things or borrow from friends. As you can see I kept my jacket on but this is still a totally acceptable Selena look. And since I wasn't really performing I didn't get hot enough to take it off. I still felt pretty brave and awesome like Selena. She was such an amazing performer, and she had great style for the time. I still wonder what all she would have accomplished if she wasn't taken from us so early in her life. Once again if you are not very familiar with Selena Quintanilla, I would highly recommend that you google her. There is so much out there to discover about her from YouTube videos to documentaries.
