Drop cloth or old shower curtain liner
This was a great weekend project. It only took a few hours of our day. The longest part being the wait for paint to dry in between the coats.
First, we made sure to remove any hardware from the door such as the doorknob and locks. We taped off the window frame so as not to get pink paint on it. Then, we covered the whole window in some brown paper to protect the window from paint splatters. We also taped any areas we wanted to be cautious of because paint can be messy.
We laid down the drop cloth [old shower curtain liner can work as well], making sure to position it under the door and where you are standing. Didn't want to mess up our pretty hardwood floors! Then paint the first coat using the roller doing your best to cover as much of the door as possible. Once you get the paint rolled on, go back in with the brush and paint those hard to reach spots you couldn't get with the roller, such as the skinny grooves on the panels. Below is an image of the first coat while wet. I always get a little nervous when the first coat goes on because it tends to look streaky when it is drying. Coat one done!
Painting Process
Once it was dry, we did repeat the steps above and painted as many coats as needed to get the coverage we wanted. For us, my husband and I, two coats did the trick. Even though it may look a little streaky when it's wet it usually always drys nice and even.
My best advice is to always make sure it is completely dry before applying another coat. If it is the slightest bit tacky it could result in an uneven finish. We also left the door open the whole time we were working on it. Fortunately for us, we have a security glass door that stayed shut and locked. If you do not have a security door or screen door I would suggest maybe hanging a drop cloth or tarp over the opening to keep any unwanted bugs and whatnot out while you are working.
We decided it would be best to let the door dry a complete 24 hrs before we added the door knocker. I didn't really have to beg my husband, Randall, to paint the door pink...but it did help that we were going to add this awesome and fierce brass lion to it. Randall actually found it on Amazon for a really great price. We named him Bubblegum. I love his wrinkled brow! That's all there is to it. Even though neither my husband nor myself are really pink people we love the look. Painting it just added a personality to our house that makes us so happy every time we see it. It is a fun way to make our house feel even more our own. We were and still are super happy with the end result. Below is a side-by-side comparison of the before and after for reference.
