I'm a sucker for clothes, and especially costumes. Fun fact, Halloween is my absolute favorite holiday! This Frida Kahlo costume has got to be one of my best to date! Maybe closer to Halloween I will post some of my throwback Halloween costumes!?
This was such an easy costume to put together! Of course, it helps that I own a Mexican style boutique which gave me access to some clothing and accessories to use for my costume. (I linked to items used for the look at the end of this post, so keep reading!)
All I made for this costume was the flower headband, and all I purchased was the monkey. I named him Diego! You may have to buy more things to complete your versions of a Frida costume, like flowers and the headband and some Mucho merch perhaps!? :) I just happened to have these items on hand cause I am a crafty person and save all my scraps from previous projects. You can get the faux flowers and headband from Michael's. If you aren't a regular Michael's shopper you can print up a coupon from their website beforehand to save 40% off an item, which always helps!
The flower crown:
Supplies- Headband, faux flowers, glue gun or other glue, scissors, and hat (optional)
- Start by picking and separating all the flowers and leaves you want to use. I pulled mine off the stems and cut the plastic connectors off the bottom of the flowers so they would glue down flat.
- You could arrange and plan exactly how you want your flowers to look on the headband or you can be brave and lazy like me and just wing it. I started gluing down the leaves first and then just placed the flowers on top.
- I used a baseball hat to hold my headband up while I was working. It made my life much easier instead of having to hold the headband with one hand and glue and place flowers with the other. That would have been difficult.
- I started on one side making clusters of flowers and then worked in more flowers to fill the holes until I got the look I was going for.
Wah-lah! Easy & beautiful flower headband!
When putting your look together think lots of colorful layers. You can't go wrong! Part your hair down the middle, throw in some braids, and you are done! If you can't braid, that's ok! A low bun will do.
We took a lot of pictures. There were so many to choose from but these were my favorites! I was planning on doing a Frida Kahlo costume already for fun for the blog, but then I heard about the Brooks Museum and Cazateatro Bilingual Theatre Group hosting a Day of the Dead parade and festival with a Frida look-a-like contest. I knew I might as well take advantage of the opportunity! I'll share photos of the festival in a blog post later this week! Did I win?? I guess you will have to stay tuned!
Love. Mucho Mucho.
